REACCIÓN A ISLANDIA
From April 10th to April 13th, Icelandic Cycle Music & Art Festival will take over the space and program of PAVILION NORDICO in Buenos Aires.
‘Reacción A Islandia’ is an exhibition of contemporary works by Icelandic visual artists curated by Gudny Gudmundsdottir and accompanied by a performance programme during the opening event.
The title of the exhibition quotes the poem ‘A Islandia’ written by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges in the late 1920s. In the poem, Borges Borges describes his fascination with Iceland’s history, its Sagas, language and unique nature. This fascination is today shared by the millions of tourists who visit the country every year, rendering the romanticised narrative a mainstream consumable cliché. A cliché that has become so ingrown into the natives’ psyche that it is now hard to define the borders between fiction and reality.
‘Reacción A Islandia’ presents a reaction to the narratives surrounding Iceland, partly build on the cliché and partly on the unspectacular, mundane reality of a nation finding its place in the global context.
